The Rocky Mountain Institute: RMI is a pioneer in whole system analysis. Often, people attempt to incrementally optimize portions of a system when the real benefits are to be gained by rethinking how those systems are organized. RMI contributes considerable practical knowledge in energy conservation, and they also are keen strategic thinkers, as exemplified by their books, Brittle Power (1982) and Winning the Oil Endgame (2005).
Project Gutenberg: Project Gutenberg is attempting to provide literary works over the internet without restriction. Many classic works have already been archived. Some of my favorites are: John Muir, The Yosemite; John Muir, The Mountains of California.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: Established by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environmental Program, the IPCC assesses the state of our understanding of climate phenomenon. The IPCC relies on analysis of peer reviewed research, and must surely be least biased consolidator of climate related phenomena. As it is a large, quasi-bureaucratic organization, I suspect its conclusions might tend towards conservatism and away from alarmism, even if a little alarmism might be warranted. For people serious about climate change, all the reports are on-line!
The Yosemite Association: An organization dedicated to the support of the Yosemite ecosystem and the promotion of environmental education in and around Yosemite National Park. |
