San Juan Islands In the north San Juan Islands, this Nature Conservancy preserve includes grasslands and once open oak/Douglas-fir woodlands. Previously, this site experienced frequent fire, presumably maintaining its open condition. Fires may have been set by Native Peoples to maintain a crop of camas, fritillaria and other food resources. Examples of native species are shown (clockwise from the upper left): Camassia quamash, Orobanche uniflora var. purpurea parasitizing Sedum spathulifolium, Corallorhiza maculata and Sanicula crassicaulis, and Opuntia fragilis. |
